Elective: A Brief History of Postwar New York City
Undergraduate
I taught the elective, “A Brief History of Postwar New York City,” which traced the urban history of postwar New York City as a series of complex intersections between the city’s social, political, economic, architectural, and real estate histories that span from the late 1940s to the early 1970s. Every week, we will examine New York through close readings of texts, audio and video clips, and case studies that look at Times Square, Roosevelt Island, the Theater District, Marcus Garvey Village housing, and SoHo, among others. In keeping with the premise of the class, discussions will uncover relationships between weekly readings to theorize how urban policies and bureaucratic frameworks manage and codify the American city and its citizens. New York City will offer us a set of urban questions that will help unpack architecture's relationship with the city and its many imaginaries—the sites for conflicting cultural, social, economic, political, aesthetic ideologies and discourses.
